Verse Mapping “Limitless Life”

I have heard about and seen different people example verse mapping so I figured I would give it a try. I must say that it is an amazing technique to use. I found that I got so much more out of the verse after I dissected it. Each word came alive and by inserting my own name it became very personal and spoke to me. It was exactly what I needed to hear. My confidence and the way I see myself is not always how I wish it would be so I took great comfort in this verse and knowing how valuable I am to God. He paid such a high price for me…(His Son) and implanted His life in me through the Spirit. I belong to Him and He loves every aspect of me. But with the Spirit within me why do I still fear?

This week we have been working on the first and second chapter of Limitless Life by Derwin L. Gray. Derwin started out the first chapter with a quote from Nelson Mandela. This quote set a great foundation for the first chapter. It said….

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” -Nelson Mandela

This is something that I had a misconception of. For some reason I perceived fear as something that I should  not do or have within me God is constantly telling us, “Do not fear,” “Do not be afraid,” “Do not be anxious.” So in a way whenever I would feel one of these emotions I would feel guilty. I would feel like I was not trusting God completely. Why am I worrying when God is in control? Why am I so afraid of the unknown and what my future holds when God has it all planned out? Am I going against God by feeling this way?

Then after reading the first chapter and reflecting on the quote by Mandela, which I referenced above, I realized that I am not alone.

Derwin starts off the chapter talking about the commonly known “David and Goliath”story. As I read back through this story in my Bible I saw where Mandela’s quote came into play. David was afraid. He was scared of facing Goliath. All the other men in the army feared him as well. No one wanted to fight the giant in fear that they would loose and be killed. The difference between David and the other men is that David found his strength and courage to overcome fear by trusting God. That is what we need to do more of this in our own lives. There are many people throughout the Bible that serve as an example of this fear of what God was asking them to do. They did not want to take risk in fear of failing and in fear of the unknown. But when they trusted in God and found their courage to take risks through Him, great things came from it.

I have been struggling lately with knowing what my “purpose” is? What is God’s will for me? What risks does He want me to take? I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what steps I should be taking to figure this out. Then I realized that it is not my responsibility to figure it out. I just have to have an open humble heart and ask God to come into my heart and direct me. He will lead me where He wants me to go, setting me up in the perfect position to take the opportunities and risks He wants for me. My job is to fully trust Him and take those first steps even though I may be fearful. He WILL be with me every step of the way and will NOT lead me astray.

So with that said… it is so comforting and important for me to remember that I will be fearful of change, the unknown and what is to come. That is normal. The important thing is that I overcome and conquer that fear by having courage. And that courage comes from God.

So take comfort in that my friends. With God you can conquer anything!!

  1. This is such an awesome post and a wonderful mapping of Ephesians 2:22! This is my first OBS, so I, too, really needed to read this today! You have dissected the verse in such a great way and gives so much more depth to the verse….a better understanding of God’s word. Makes me want to map out some of my favorite verses!! Thank you for sharing!

    • Thank you Sylvia! I am so glad you enjoyed it! I loved trying this technique and I too plan on trying this with some of my favorite verses as well! I am so glad that you are trying the OBS! It has been such a blessing in my life. I will be praying that it is for you as well!
      Much love

  2. I love your verse map. I have done this in the past, but not recently, and you have inspired me to give it a try again. Fear is a big one for me and when I get in that fear or anxiety mode, it can be crippling. Thank you for reminding me that I don’t need to feel guilt about my fear but, through my strength in God, face it with the courage I gain through him.

    • Thank you Sherise! It is so true. Fear and anxiety has definitely been crippling in my life as well! It is one of my biggest struggles and something I constantly have to work on!
      Much love

  3. I have never heard of or seen verse mapping. I’m a very visual person so it definitely speaks to me. I also struggle with really understanding what a verse is saying and what it means. This is a wonderful way to dissect my understanding, personalize the Scriptures and also weave in my takeaways from the readings in a Limitless Life. Thank you for sharing your map and introducing this concept to me!!

I too have been struggling to find my purpose. You reminded me to let go and let God. Its actually a beautiful freedom that allows me to observe and jump in to serve God and others.

    God’s blesseings to you!!!

I am so glad you liked the verse mapping. I too am a very visual and kinesthetic learner. So writing it out and then looking at it is very helpful for me! I hope this technique works for you! I enjoyed trying it out and will definitely be continuing it as well!
And you are so right, letting go and letting God is such a beautiful thing but at the same time such a challenge! It is something I have to work on daily!
      Much love

  4. Love this blog! Your verse map in wonderful – it’s such a great tool! Thank you for posting your heart 🙂

  5. I can so relate about driving yourself crazy trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do….and realizing that if I simply listen and walk, HE will take care of it! Thank you for sharing your heart!

    • Exactly! It is so nice not having to be stressed out trying to figure it all out! God takes care of that for us! The challenge is letting him! But it is so incredible when we do!

  6. Anna, you are so wise. It was so good to read your post today. I retired last July and since then have, like you, struggled to know what God’s purpose is for me. As you said, I simply need to have a humble and open heart and God will provide the answers. Right now I’m traveling through Mexico with my husband. Thank you.

    • Thank you so much Kristine!
Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy your time in Mexico with your husband! I am so envious of you! Mexico sounds amazing!

  7. This is my first OBS too. Your mapping is amazing! I had to save the picture so that I can use as a sample and try it as well. What stood out to me most about your post was the part where you spoke about trying to figure it out. For the past month in prayer I have been asking God to reveal his will, his purpose, what’s next ?!?! I love that you wrote that our job is not to figure it out, but to have an open humble heart and ask for his direction. Beautiful! thank you for this post! Great First week in this study! 🙂

    • Erica
I am so glad you liked the verse mapping! I really enjoyed trying it out and will definitely be continuing this technique with other verses! I hope it works well for you! And it is so hard to sit, wait and let God be in control! It is something I struggle with daily! I will be praying that God will direct both of us, leading us right where we need to be and showing us exactly what his will is for each of us!
So glad you have decided to be a part of this study!!
      Much love

  8. What a wonderful post you have here…love how you did the verse mapping…I have done other obs studies, but I feel like I need to “dig in”…thank you for writing what you did…it hit home for me also, thinking that I’m not allowed to “fear” or be afraid….that It’s ok and to let Jesus take care of it…I will also find my purpose….

    • Thank you Nancy! It has been so great reading each post today, realizing that I am not alone in this struggle! It is so comforting to see that others deal with fear and finding their purpose as well! It is so difficult to let go and let God direct but at the same time it is incredible that we do not have to worry about it. God will take care of it for us!

  9. SO can relate to the “fear” issue. What do I do, what is my purpose? Be still and know I am God and Be strong be courageous for the Lord God is with always comes to me. I just love how many blogs I have read today that have helped me in some way. Thank you for writing!

    • Angie,
I second that! It has been amazing reading all these blogs today and relating to so many! It is so comforting to realize that so many of us share the same struggles with each other and are not alone! This blog hop has really helped me and challenged me! I am so thankful to be part of it! Thank you for your sweet comment!

    • I am so glad that you are trying the verse mapping! I hope you get as much out of it as I did! Please share if you come up with things to add or new ideas to make this technique even better.

  10. I, too, am letting go of the crazy of “trying to figure out…” . I loved the quote in Chapter 2 “You must stop trying to do what only Jesus can do; focus on God’s love for you and how He wants to set you free by living through you.” It is so much better to affirm who God IS than to keep rehearsing my flaws.

  11. Wow! I love this blog! Your verse mapping is beyond helpful and really interesting; I believe I’ll give it a shot. This is my first time participating in an OBS, so thank you for the inspiration! 🙂

  12. Anna – thank you for sharing how you TRUST in God to overcome fear with COURAGE! ~Stacey

  13. Anna – I LOVE this. Thank you so much for your encouraging words and for sharing the revelation you received while digging in to this scripture! So, so good! I hope you’ll keep doing verse mapping and sharing your insights with us! 🙂

  14. I love your picture of the verse mapping! Makes me want to try it!
I definitely relate to the struggle of finding purpose and I too am learning to just trust God with what he gives today and be humble enough to let him lead me to whatever comes next rather than making something happen myself.

  15. I had never heard of mapping a verse until now. I love the idea and am looking forward to using it on many more verses.

“Searching for my purpose” that’s me. I’ve been struggling with that for the past few years since my children graduated from high school and don’t need mom like they used to. Keep asking God what I’m to do now. Feel like I just keep myself busy not doing anything really important. But maybe like David God is preparing me for something to come. Like you I’m going to have to relax – stop trying so hard and fight my fears to do what I feel God is asking me to do.

    Thank you for sharing.
